Possessed are an American metal band from the Bay Area who literally invented the term "death metal" with their 1985 debut album "Seven Churches." Founded by teenagers led by Jeff Becerra, the band combined the speed of thrash metal with harsher vocals and darker atmosphere, creating an entirely new subgenre. Their songs like "The Exorcist" or "Pentagram" became classics of the genre. Tragically, the band was struck by misfortune - Jeff Becerra became a victim of a shooting in 1989 and ended up in a wheelchair. Nevertheless, Possessed returned after years of inactivity and still perform today, with Becerra singing from his wheelchair with incredible energy. Without Possessed, death metal might never have existed - their legacy lives on in thousands of bands worldwide.
